Club President: Diogo Jota Was in a ‘Happy Moment’ Before Tragic Accident

Late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was in high spirits shortly before the tragic car accident that claimed his life and that of his brother, André Silva.

Álvaro Cerqueira, President of Gondomar SC, revealed he had spoken to Jota just hours before the fatal crash. Jota and Silva died in the early hours of Thursday morning when their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout in northwest Spain, veered off the road, and burst into flames with both men still inside.

The funeral for the two brothers is scheduled for Saturday morning in their hometown of Gondomar.

Cerqueira, who had maintained regular contact with Jota over the years, shared details of their final conversation.

“We spoke just after 10 p.m. last night. He was doing well,” Cerqueira told Jornal de Notícias. “We talked almost every week, and I know he was going through a happy period in his life.”
