Michael van Gerwen Responds to Circulating Footage Allegedly Involving Physical Altercation
On Saturday evening, video footage began circulating on gossip platforms, appearing to show darts star Michael van Gerwen involved in a physical altercation. Speaking exclusively to Dartsnews.com, the three-time world champion downplayed the incident, insisting it was not as serious as portrayed.
“After a fun night out, we stopped to get some food, and unfortunately I found myself in a situation you’d rather avoid,” Van Gerwen explained. “The man approached me from the kitchen following a verbal exchange — it wasn’t the other way around. It’s unfortunate that people are exaggerating what really happened.”
Footage of the incident shows the situation being quickly de-escalated. Van Gerwen noted that others intervened immediately to defuse the scuffle. “As you can see, people stepped in right away, and the matter was quickly resolved. I even had a conversation with the man’s nephew afterwards, and we settled things before leaving,” he added.
Van Gerwen had taken the weekend off and was not competing at the Swiss Darts Trophy. However, he is set to return to action next week in Leicester, where he’ll take part in three floor tournaments as he aims to qualify for the Players Championship Finals. Currently ranked 103rd on the Players Championship Order of Merit, Van Gerwen must finish the Pro Tour season inside the top 64 to secure his spot in the major event held in Minehead.
