Players Championship Order of Merit After Events 26-27: Top Three Players Face Challenges in Minehead Race

Joe Cullen, nicknamed ‘The Rockstar,’ clinched victory at the 27th Players Championship yesterday in Hildesheim, Germany, edging out Gerwyn Price 8-7 in a thrilling final. This win not only boosts Cullen’s chances of qualifying for the World Grand Prix but also lifts him to eighth place on the Players Championship Order of Merit.

This marked Cullen’s third final appearance in Players Championship events this year. Earlier, he finished runner-up to Rob Cross in the first tournament but secured a win against Gian van Veen in the fifth. After a period of early exits and mixed results, the 36-year-old Englishman is back on form and climbing the rankings. With seven tournaments still remaining, Cullen has already secured his spot in the Players Championship Finals.

Gerwyn Price Leads the Rankings with Strong Recent Form

Gerwyn Price, ‘The Iceman,’ currently tops the Order of Merit after a tournament win and a finals appearance in recent weeks, positioning himself as the clear favorite to enter the Players Championship Finals as the number one seed. Hot on his heels is 23-year-old Dutch player Gian van Veen, sitting second, £13,500 behind Price. Damon Heta completes the top three, trailing by £23,500.

Rounding out the top five are Ross Smith and Stephen Bunting, while Jermaine Wattimena and Cameron Menzies, both title winners this year, remain comfortably inside the top seven. The top ten also includes Chris Dobey, Joe Cullen, and Jonny Clayton.

Top Players Facing Challenges to Qualify

Some surprising names are currently struggling to secure their place in the top 64, which is essential for qualification. Luke Littler, known as ‘The Nuke,’ has participated in only a few Players Championships this year and stands 58th, indicating he will be eager to compete in upcoming tournaments.

Another top contender facing difficulties is Luke Humphries, the world number one. Ranked 66th on the Order of Merit, ‘Cool Hand Luke’ has missed several events and must deliver strong performances to defend his Players Championship Finals title, which he won in both 2023 and 2024.

Even more challenging is the situation for world number three Michael van Gerwen. Currently ranked 103rd, ‘Mighty Mike’ will likely need a tournament win to qualify for the finals—a tournament he has claimed seven times, most recently in 2022.

Other notable players outside the top 64 include Mensur Suljovic, Nathan Aspinall, Kim Huybrechts, Jose de Sousa, and Dimitri Van den Bergh.

Players Championship Pauses Before Resuming in Leicester

The Players Championship circuit will take a short break and resume on Tuesday, September 30, in Leicester. The final event of the year, the 34th Players Championship, is scheduled for exactly one month later in Wigan.
