EPL: Maresca Advises Chelsea Star to Seek Playing Time Elsewhere
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has suggested it might be best for Ben Chilwell to leave the club, given his recent struggles and limited game time.
Chilwell, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2020, has faced various injuries and has seen his role as left-back diminish. Over four seasons, he has made just 70 Premier League appearances and only 13 last season.
Maresca acknowledged his fondness for Chilwell but noted that the defender has struggled to find his place in the current squad. “Chilwell has been ill and hasn’t trained for the last few days,” Maresca said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s game against Manchester City. “He didn’t play against Inter in the pre-season because, despite my appreciation for him, he’s having difficulty finding the right position in the team.”
He added, “With 22 players training, everyone wants to play, but not all can. If a player isn’t getting minutes, it’s not beneficial for anyone. It might be better for Chilwell to move on and get regular playing time elsewhere. We’ll see what the transfer window brings.”
