Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has criticized referee Felix Zwayer’s response following their 2-1 defeat to England in the Euro 2024 semi-final on Wednesday evening.

Despite taking the lead through Xavi Simons, the Dutch lost the match. Harry Kane equalized from the penalty spot, and Ollie Watkins scored the winning goal in the 90th minute.

The penalty was awarded after Denzel Dumfries attempted to block a shot but ended up clipping Kane on the foot. The VAR team advised Zwayer to review the decision, and the German referee ultimately awarded England a penalty.

When asked about Zwayer’s performance, Van Dijk told beIN Sports: “I don’t know what to say, I don’t know if I should say something about this. But I think it says it all that the referee went in quite quickly after the game and had no time to shake hands.”
