Manchester United has officially appointed Jason Wilcox as the club’s new technical director, marking a significant step in the club’s internal restructuring efforts following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a 28% stake in the team.

Wilcox, who previously served as Southampton’s director of football, emerged as the preferred candidate for the technical director role after extensive discussions between United and Southampton regarding compensation.

In a statement released by United, it was confirmed: “Jason Wilcox has joined Manchester United as Technical Director with immediate effect. He will work with all technical areas of the football department to achieve the highest standards of performance.”

Southampton, while expressing disappointment over Wilcox’s departure, acknowledged the agreement reached with United on compensation and wished him well for the future.

United’s pursuit of Wilcox comes amid ongoing interest in Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth for the role of sporting director. Negotiations with Southampton were reportedly smoother compared to those with Newcastle, leading to Wilcox’s appointment.

Wilcox, who boasts previous experience in various academy positions at Manchester City, will soon be joined by former City colleague Omar Berrada, who is set to assume the role of CEO at United starting this summer. Ashworth’s eventual arrival is viewed as inevitable by United’s leadership.
