Alexia Putellas scored a superb free-kick as Spain defeated Nigeria 1-0 in a tightly contested Group C match in Nantes on Sunday. Nigeria opted for a defensive approach, allowing La Roja to dominate possession early on.

Despite their control, the world champions struggled to break down the Nigerian defense, expertly marshaled by the experienced Osinachi Ohale.

Esther Okoronkwo nearly broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. Set up by Rasheedat Ajibade, her goal-bound effort was saved by Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll.
