Portugal Banks on Ronaldo’s Leadership for Euro Triumph
The 39-year-old football legend Cristiano Ronaldo is poised to make history once again in Germany this summer as he participates in his 11th major tournament, marking a record sixth appearance at the European Championship. Ronaldo aims to extend his unmatched record of 14 goals in the competition.
Despite concerns that his move to the Saudi Pro League might affect his performance for Portugal, Ronaldo dispelled doubts by finishing as the second top goalscorer in the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
Having faced a setback during the 2022 World Cup, where he was benched by former coach Fernando Santos during the knock-out stage, Ronaldo has reclaimed his role as the team’s linchpin. Portugal boasts a formidable attacking lineup including Bruno Fernandez, Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota, and Goncalo Ramos.
Belgium’s coach, Martinez, acknowledges Ronaldo’s unparalleled impact, emphasizing his invaluable experience in the dressing room. Ronaldo’s former teammate Pepe, now 41, also joins the squad due to his leadership qualities.
Despite being favorites to advance from Group F, Portugal is wary of underestimating opponents, mindful of their narrow escapes in the group stage en route to winning the 2016 title. Portugal kicks off their Euro 2024 campaign against the Czech Republic on June 18, followed by matches against Turkey and Georgia on June 22 and 26, respectively.
