“Local Govt Autonomy Can Stop Insecurity,” Says Benue ADC Guber Aspirant Adejoh

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benue State, Peter Adejoh, has identified full financial and administrative autonomy for local governments as a crucial solution to Nigeria’s escalating insecurity.

Speaking to journalists at his office, Adejoh highlighted the rising incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence across the country, with particular concern for Benue State. He argued that insecurity often originates at the grassroots level, where local councils lack the authority and resources to respond effectively.

“Security challenges often begin at the community level, yet local governments have been weakened by the denial of their funds and independence. Without resources, they cannot create jobs, support local security initiatives, or respond promptly to emerging threats,” Adejoh said.

The ADC governorship hopeful linked the surge in criminal activities to widespread poverty and unemployment, particularly in rural areas. He maintained that empowering local councils would enable them to implement development programs that engage youth productively.

“When young people are gainfully employed and see a future for themselves, crime loses its appeal,” he noted.

Adejoh also criticized the state–local government joint account system, describing it as a major obstacle to grassroots development and effective security management. He pledged that, if elected governor, his administration would ensure funds meant for local governments are released directly, with council leaders held accountable for security, development, and citizen welfare.

He further emphasized the importance of collaboration among local governments, traditional rulers, and security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve response times to threats. Adejoh added that lasting peace in Benue would also require the resettlement of displaced persons and reconstruction of communities affected by violence.

The ADC aspirant urged Nigerians to reconsider governance structures at the grassroots, insisting that empowering local governments is essential for sustainable security and national development.
