Real Madrid secured their record 15th Champions League title by defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in Saturday’s final. Held at Wembley, Los Blancos were the favorites and fulfilled expectations, dominating the game for much of the evening.

Borussia Dortmund, surprise finalists after overcoming Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals and Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals, couldn’t replicate their earlier upsets and suffered a heartbreaking defeat. Karim Adeyemi and Niclas Fullkrug missed crucial opportunities for Dortmund in the first half, which Madrid managed to end at 0-0 despite BVB’s strong performance.

The breakthrough came in the second half when Dani Carvajal headed in a Toni Kroos corner, marking his first Champions League goal in five years. This goal was particularly significant as it was Kroos’ final impactful moment for Madrid, having announced his retirement after Euro 2024. Both Kroos and captain Nacho Fernandez played their last game for the club, while Marco Reus made his final appearance for Dortmund from the bench.

Vinicius Junior secured Madrid’s victory with a goal in the final ten minutes after Ian Maatsen’s defensive error. Dortmund nearly pulled one back through Fullkrug, but the effort was ruled offside, marking their closest attempt to re-enter the match.

Madrid’s win at Wembley completes a remarkable double, having also reclaimed the La Liga title from rivals Barcelona. This victory marks their second Champions League triumph in three years and their sixth in the last decade.
