Real Madrid Secures Dramatic Champions League Final
Real Madrid has clinched a spot in the 2024 Champions League final at Wembley after staging a breathtaking late comeback to overcome Bayern Munich in a nail-biting semi-final second leg at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.
Their dramatic 4-3 aggregate triumph, sealed with two late close-range goals from veteran substitute Joselu, marks Madrid’s 18th European Cup final appearance as they aim for a record-extending 15th title. For manager Carlo Ancelotti, it presents an opportunity to secure his seventh European Cup – two as a player and four as a manager thus far in his illustrious career.
The first leg in Munich ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, with Vinicius Junior netting a late penalty equalizer after Bayern had overturned his first-half opener with goals from Leroy Sane and Harry Kane to lead 2-1.
In front of their home crowd, Madrid dominated the second leg, narrowly edging possession but significantly outshooting their German counterparts. However, it was Bayern’s 38-year-old captain Manuel Neuer who kept them in the tie with a string of impressive saves. The deadlock was finally broken in the second half by Alphonso Davies, who scored his first-ever Champions League goal with a powerful strike into the top corner.
Although Madrid quickly responded with a goal from Matthijs de Ligt, it was disallowed after a VAR review detected a push on Joshua Kimmich. Undeterred, Madrid continued to press, and their persistence paid off in the dying minutes. Joselu capitalized on a rare Neuer error, scoring from close range to level the tie. In a stunning turn of events, Joselu struck again in stoppage time, sealing Madrid’s place in the final amid VAR controversy over an initial offside call.
Mreeanwhile, Borussia Dortmund secured their spot in the final with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Paris Saint-Germain. Mats Hummels’ goal in the first leg in Paris, coupled with Niclas Fullkrug’s strike at home, dashed PSG’s hopes of Champions League glory and denied Kylian Mbappe’s dream of lifting the trophy before his anticipated departure from the club.
