Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur lead Team World to third Laver Cup title
Longtime Davis Cup rivals the United States and Australia set aside their historic competition to power Team World to a resounding 15–9 victory at the 2025 Laver Cup in San Francisco—marking Team World’s third title in the past four years.
Of the 13 points required to secure the trophy, 12 were delivered by American and Australian players, showcasing the strength of this transpacific alliance. The standout performer was Alex de Minaur, who contributed seven points—four on Saturday (singles and doubles, alongside American Alex Michelsen) and three more in singles on Sunday.
Taylor Fritz added five points, including the championship-clinching victory in the final match: a confident 6-3, 7-6(4) win over Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Laver Cup debutant Joao Fonseca earned the remaining point in a notable breakout performance.
Fritz, riding high after a stunning win over Carlos Alcaraz the night before, carried that momentum into Sunday. He broke Zverev in the German’s opening service game and dominated with his serve, winning 79% of first-serve points and 70% on second serves. Despite a minor stumble while serving at 4–3 in the second set, Fritz held firm under pressure.
The second-set tiebreak saw Fritz surge ahead early with a perfectly executed backhand topspin lob for a 3–0 lead, eventually sealing the title with a crisp backhand volley winner on Team World’s first championship point.
Fritz’s win improved his career head-to-head against Zverev to 9–5, including six straight victories. It also helped close the book on a mixed month for the 27-year-old American. Earlier in September, he fell in the US Open quarterfinals, failing to replicate last year’s runner-up run, and later suffered a tough Davis Cup loss to Czechia’s Jiri Lehecka.
But at the Laver Cup, Fritz bounced back emphatically, delivering two standout wins and underlining his value as one of Team World’s cornerstones.
