Man United Would Be Crazy Not to Sign Donnarumma – Rooney
Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney has called on his former club to make a bold move for Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who appears to be on his way out of Paris Saint-Germain.
Rooney believes the 26-year-old would bring much-needed composure and reliability to United’s backline—qualities he feels are currently lacking with the club’s current goalkeeping options, Andre Onana and Altay Bayındır.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former England captain reflected on a similar moment in United’s past, when Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar replaced Roy Carroll and Tim Howard.
“I remember when we had Roy Carroll and Tim Howard—it didn’t feel like the defenders had full trust in either of them,” Rooney said. “But when Van der Sar came in, he brought calmness and that allowed the defence to perform better.”
Rooney believes United are in a similar situation now, lacking confidence between the sticks, and sees Donnarumma as the ideal solution.
“Donnarumma is only 26 and already one of the best goalkeepers in the world. It would be crazy for Manchester United not to try and sign him,” he added.
His comments come in the wake of Manchester United’s narrow loss to Arsenal on Sunday, in which Bayındır, deputizing in goal, was involved in a costly error. Despite the Turkish keeper’s claims that he was fouled by Arsenal’s William Saliba during the build-up, the goal was allowed to stand—handing United their first defeat of the season.
Meanwhile, PSG manager Luis Enrique has reportedly informed Donnarumma that he is not part of the club’s future plans. The Italian international is yet to sign a new contract, potentially opening the door for a move.
