Meta Enhances Safeguards Against ‘Sextortion’ on Instagram

Meta has announced its commitment to developing innovative tools aimed at safeguarding teenage users from the perils of “sextortion” scams rampant on its Instagram platform. This initiative comes amidst mounting concerns over the detrimental effects of social media on the mental well-being of young individuals.

In a statement released by the US-based company, Meta disclosed its ongoing efforts to introduce an AI-powered “nudity protection” tool designed to automatically detect and blur images containing nudity that are sent to minors via the app’s messaging system.

Capucine Tuffier, overseeing child protection at Meta France, emphasized the tool’s capacity to shield recipients from unsolicited intimate content, empowering them with the option to view or abstain from viewing such imagery.

Moreover, Meta revealed its intention to proactively engage with users involved in such exchanges by dispatching messages containing counsel and safety guidelines.

By extending support and guidance, the company aims to bolster awareness and resilience among individuals navigating potentially perilous online interactions.

The inception of these protective measures follows Meta’s earlier pledge, articulated in January, to implement comprehensive safeguards for individuals under the age of 18 across its platforms.
