United States President Joe Biden is set to face his first press conference since a challenging debate against Donald Trump, a pivotal moment that could influence his reelection prospects. At the NATO summit in Washington DC, scheduled for 5:30 pm (2130 GMT) Thursday, Biden, aged 81, will confront mounting pressure within his Democratic party to reconsider his candidacy due to concerns about his age and health.

Described by the White House as a “big boy” press conference, Biden faces intense scrutiny to demonstrate his ability to handle unscripted moments effectively, which have been rare during his presidency. Any missteps during this event could escalate the calls from some Democrats urging him to withdraw from the 2024 election race.

The pressure intensified when actor George Clooney, a staunch supporter who recently hosted a high-profile fundraiser for Biden, publicly advised against his reelection bid. Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi also added to the pressure by refraining from endorsing Biden outright, suggesting he should make a decision post-NATO summit.

Democratic Senator Peter Welch and several House Democrats have openly voiced concerns about Biden’s candidacy, while others are awaiting his performance at the upcoming press conference before taking a stance.

Critics have pointed out that Biden has held fewer news conferences compared to previous presidents, often limiting questions during joint appearances with foreign leaders. Combined with sparse interviews, this has fueled accusations that the White House is shielding Biden’s age-related challenges from the public eye.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has pledged that Thursday’s press conference will feature multiple questions, aiming to address growing apprehensions. A disappointing performance could exacerbate worries about Biden’s vigor and mental acuity, particularly following his lackluster debate against Trump.

Beyond domestic concerns, NATO allies are seeking reassurance about Biden’s leadership capabilities amid fears that a return of the isolationist Trump could unsettle international alliances.

While Biden attributed his debate performance to a cold and jet lag from extensive travel, Clooney’s recent commentary in The New York Times suggested broader concerns about Biden’s vitality compared to previous years.

Despite these challenges, Biden remains committed to running in November, supported by primary votes from the Democratic party. However, some Democratic leaders, including Pelosi, are reportedly attempting to appeal to his pragmatism in navigating these unprecedented political pressures.
