American citizens currently in Nigeria have until July 31, 2025, to resolve any visa overstay issues or face stiff penalties, the Nigerian government has warned.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo recently announced stricter enforcement measures for foreigners who overstay their visas, including daily fines and long-term bans from re-entering the country.

In a notice posted on its website, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria urged affected U.S. citizens to make use of the Nigerian government’s amnesty portal to regularize their status before the deadline.

“US citizens currently in Nigeria who have overstayed their visa are strongly encouraged to fix their stay through the amnesty portal before July 31, 2025,” the embassy stated. Failure to comply, it warned, could result in “significant financial penalties and long-term restrictions on re-entry to Nigeria.”

The Ministry of Interior has imposed a $15 daily overstay fine, effective from May 1, 2025. However, during the amnesty period, which runs until July 31, eligible individuals can resolve their visa issues without paying any penalties.
