Anambra Government Condemns Killing of 13 Ebonyi Indigenes, Vows Justice For Victims
The Anambra State Government, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has strongly condemned the recent killing of 13 Ebonyi State natives residing in the Ogboji community, Orumba South Local Government Area.
In an official statement released by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the government described the attack as a “dastardly act” and extended its deepest condolences to the victims’ families. The statement emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.
“The Anambra State Government is deeply saddened by the recent killing of innocent lives in Ogboji, Orumba South LGA,” the statement read. “We strongly condemn this heinous act and extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.”
According to reports, the victims, all indigenes of Ebonyi State, were allegedly ambushed and killed by gunmen on Sunday evening while returning from a community meeting.
Reacting to the tragedy, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State expressed deep sorrow and outrage, describing the massacre as a direct attack on peace, unity, and the sanctity of human life. Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, Nwifuru pledged to collaborate closely with Governor Soludo to ensure justice is served.
In his remarks, Commissioner Mefor clarified that early investigations suggest the killings stemmed from an internal dispute and were not ethnically motivated, in response to growing concerns of intercommunal tensions.
“We want to assure Ndi Anambra and the broader public that this incident was not targeted at any particular state or ethnic group,” Mefor said.
He further stressed that law enforcement agencies have been tasked with launching a full-scale investigation into the incident.
“The state government expects the police command to carry out a thorough investigation, identify those responsible for this heinous crime, and ensure they are held accountable,” he added. “We are committed to doing everything within our power to see that justice is served.”
Mefor also urged residents of Ogboji and the entire state to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to support the investigation and help maintain public order.
“The government calls on all residents to stay calm and work with law enforcement agencies,” the statement concluded. “We remain dedicated to preserving peace and security across Anambra State.”
