Anambra State Govt Denies Plans to Build Second Airport at Ndikelionwu

The Anambra State Government has denied rumors circulating on social media about plans to construct a new airport at Ndikelionwu in Orumba North Local Government Area.

Dr. Law Mefor, Commissioner for Information, stated on Friday in Awka that there is no intention to build another airport less than four years after the commissioning of the Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport in Umeri, Anambra East.

In a press statement, Mefor dismissed the reports as false, urging the public to disregard what he described as distractions propagated by anti-government elements.

The speculation, he suggested, may have arisen following a recent visit to the Anambra Mixed-Use Industrial City (AMIC), where some observers may have assumed the industrial park would necessitate its own airport.

Clarifying the government’s position, Mefor explained that, as part of Governor Charles Soludo’s Urban Renewal Plan, the state is studying multimodal transport options—including railways and airports—as part of the AMIC master plan. This is to ensure sustainable economic growth and infrastructure development in the long term.

“The recent site visit was aimed at starting technical assessments to identify the most suitable locations for these transport systems within the industrial park and the new city design, should the need arise in the future,” he said.

The commissioner further outlined that the master plan integrates the 4,000-hectare AMIC site, which includes a pharmaceutical hub, innovation centers, education and medical facilities, tourism sites, business districts, and residential clusters, all aimed at driving industrialization and sustainable growth.

He emphasized that no decision has been made regarding the construction of a railway or airport to serve AMIC, and that any such decisions would be communicated officially.

“Members of the public are advised to disregard this false report and rely only on official announcements regarding significant projects and developments in the state,” Mefor concluded.
