Alumni Association Calls for Dismissal of Cross River University Governing Council
The Alumni Association of the University of Cross River State has urged Governor Bassey Otu to dissolve the governing council of the institution. This call was made in a communique released at the conclusion of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, and signed by the National Secretary, Njang Ndoma.
The association directed its legal team to immediately initiate legal action to halt further funding of all activities and claims by the governing council. It accused the council of incompetence and financial mismanagement, citing unnecessary meetings aimed at drawing sitting allowances for members to the detriment of staff welfare.
The alumni urged the governor to reconstitute the council with individuals who have a deep understanding of university operations. They emphasized the need for the council to attract funds and projects to the university, noting its failure to do so in nearly four years.
Asserting the supremacy of the law establishing the university, the alumni insisted that all organs of the institution, including the governing council, must adhere to the laws at all times.
In their statement, they expressed dissatisfaction with the current council’s performance, stating that it has failed to attract any funds or projects to the university since its inauguration in June 2020. They called on Governor Otu to dissolve the council and appoint individuals capable of formulating policies and attracting resources to advance the institution’s “People’s First Agenda.”
