Benue varsity ASUU chapter protest non-implementation of agreement
Despite the heavy rain, the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi stood united on Wednesday to demonstrate against the Federal Government’s failure to implement the revised 2009 agreement.
Following the protest, UNIAGRIC’s ASUU chairman, Paul Anyagh, highlighted ongoing concerns such as Earned Academic Allowance, University Transparency Accountability Solutions, Funding for Public Universities’ Revitalization, University Proliferation issues, Salary Withholding problems, and Council Members’ premature removal.
Anyagh was disappointed by FG’s failure to address the EAA issue, despite its promise to integrate it into the 2022 budget year.
Anyagh emphasized that public universities are still awaiting funding, with no disbursements having been made to any institution.
He highlighted that Nigerian university lecturers continue to receive the lowest salaries in Africa, a situation exacerbated by the government’s reluctance to endorse the agreement negotiated by the Nimi Briggs committee and ASUU.
The head of ASUU criticized the government for implementing laws that hinder the growth of public universities without providing adequate funding.
The union urged the government to fulfill its promises and honor agreements instead of making empty commitments.
