JAMB Declares Daily Part-Time Programs Illegal

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, stated on Monday that some institutions in Nigeria offering daily part-time programs are operating illegally.

During a fact-finding visit to JAMB’s Ibadan Zonal Office in Oyo State, Oloyede addressed various allegations made against JAMB officials, asserting that most were baseless. He explained that many of the issues faced by students were due to their own actions, particularly those who, in their desperation to secure admission, resorted to shortcuts that have now caused them problems.

Oloyede highlighted several cases, including one where a student received an unauthorized admission seven years ago and only now sought recognition. Another case involved a student requesting a name change years after it was officially changed, likening it to asking for a primary school certificate under a new name.

Regarding admissions for Higher National Diploma (HND) programs, Oloyede clarified that JAMB has no involvement in the process, as the law does not permit the board to register candidates for HND programs. He criticized situations where institutions admitted more students than authorized for part-time programs and then treated them as full-time students upon graduation. Oloyede emphasized that JAMB cannot retroactively change part-time students to full-time status, as it would conflict with the board’s regulations and the accurate reporting of graduates to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
