Yobe varsity ASUU embarks on indefinite strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yobe State University has declared an indefinite strike, citing the Yobe State Government’s failure to meet several outstanding demands.
According to the Chairman of the ASUU chapter, Ahmed Karage, the union’s key demands include the implementation of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage for 2024, with the accompanying consequential adjustments, as well as the payment of arrears from the 2019 minimum wage adjustments. The union is also calling for appropriate promotion placements, annual increments, and the payment of a 35% and 25% salary award with consequential adjustments from January 2023 to date.
In addition, ASUU is demanding the payment of postgraduate facilitation allowances for academic staff, along with other entitlements. The union is also pushing for greater institutional autonomy for Yobe State University.
“After several months of engagements, formal communications, and appeals to the relevant government authorities, we regret to announce that the academic staff under ASUU have been left with no choice but to embark on an indefinite industrial action,” Karage stated.
He emphasized that members of the union would not return to work until all their demands are fully met.
