Mohbad’s Family Prohibits Wunmi From Using Their Surname
The family of the late singer Mohbad has prohibited his widow, Wunmi, from using their surname, Aloba, pending the conclusion of a DNA test to determine the paternity of their son, Liam.
The decision comes amid a lingering paternity dispute that intensified after Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023.
Mohbad passed away after receiving an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse. Following widespread public concern, his body was exhumed for an autopsy. However, in May 2025, the investigation hit a setback when pathologists announced that the cause of death could not be ascertained.
In a new statement jointly signed by the family head, Omolayo Aloba, and the late singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, the family formally barred Wunmi from bearing the Aloba name. They argued that she was never legally married to Mohbad, stating: “For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites (payment of bride price) were never completed.”
The family also appointed Oladayo Ogungbe as their only legal representative for matters relating to the DNA case and Mohbad’s estate. Meanwhile, Wahab Shittu will continue to oversee issues concerning the investigation into Mohbad’s death.
According to the statement, both Wunmi and the child will be included in the administration of Mohbad’s estate once the DNA test confirms that Liam is indeed the late singer’s biological son.
