Oba of Benin Awards Rema with Royal Medal
The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has presented a royal plaque to afrobeats superstar, Rema.
The plaque was given to Rema on Thursday during his visit to the Oba’s palace, ahead of his homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.
A day earlier, Rema accompanied Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, to the groundbreaking ceremony of the Edo Arena. The governor announced that the 6,000-seat venue would be named Rema Dome in the singer’s honor.
Rema, whose full name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has been a proud representative of Edo State. He has consistently highlighted the culture and legacy of the ancient Benin empire in his music and performances.
His recent hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, is a tribute to the city of Benin. In the song, Rema expresses that he deserves a medal from the Oba for promoting the kingdom.
