Curfew Enforcement: Plateau Police Arrest Two for Attempted Looting
Plateau State Police have apprehended two individuals in Jos North Local Government Area amid a 24-hour curfew imposed by the state government. The curfew was enacted following attempts to disrupt peace under the guise of #EndBadGovernance protests.
The arrests occurred on Monday when the suspects were allegedly attempting to vandalize and loot shops near the C Division in Jos. Police intervened, arresting the two individuals while others escaped.
Police spokesperson Alabo Alfred confirmed the arrests to NIGERIA NEWS 247, stating that the suspects will be investigated and prosecuted according to the law.
“The curfew is being enforced, and the state is currently calm,” Alfred said. “The two arrested individuals were caught attempting to vandalize property, and they will face legal action.”
He urged residents to stay vigilant and adhere to the curfew, supporting efforts to maintain peace in the state.
Protesters Vacate Jos Streets
The Old Airport junction in Jos, a focal point for the #EndBadGovernance protests, was deserted on Monday. The area, which had been bustling with demonstrators since the protests began last Thursday, was empty when visited by reporters.
**Protests to Continue Despite Curfew**
Protest leaders in Plateau State, including Isa Elbuba, have condemned the curfew as an attempt to stifle the voice of the people. Elbuba, who leads the Initiative for a Better and Brighter Nigeria, criticized the state government’s decision, asserting that the protests had been peaceful and marked by unprecedented unity between Christians and Muslims.
“The curfew is an attempt to silence the voices of suffering Nigerians,” Elbuba said. “Our protests have been peaceful, and the solidarity shown is historic. We will continue our mission to ‘take back the soul of our nation’ once the curfew is lifted.”
Elbuba dismissed reports of a minor incident that reportedly triggered the curfew as an exaggeration, maintaining that the protests would resume immediately after the curfew ends. He called on protesters to remain peaceful and law-abiding while avoiding confrontation with law enforcement.
