Petr Obi has condemned the inhumane treatment of minors involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests in a post on his X account.

He expressed his outrage after watching disturbing footage of 124 protesters, including minors, appearing in court as part of efforts to enforce their fundamental rights. The video revealed children who were so weak they could barely stand, with some fainting from exhaustion and lack of nourishment. Their visibly malnourished condition is a cause for alarm for every citizen in Nigeria.

Obi criticized the federal government’s handling of these minors, highlighting that they were treated poorly despite being in state custody. He pointed out that the charges against them relate to protesting against bad governance, a right protected by the constitution in a democratic society. Ironically, many current officials championed this constitutional right while in opposition.

He emphasized that all suspects, including those in correctional facilities, deserve to be treated with dignity as human beings.

Obi urged the presiding judge for halting the trial, preventing further embarrassment for Nigeria as a democratic nation. He called on the relevant authorities, including the Minister of Justice, the Attorney General, the Police, the DSS, and the National Human Rights Commission, to thoroughly investigate this inhumane treatment of minors to prevent such incidents in the future.
