The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated the revision of the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law in response to demands for the reinstatement of Muhammad Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano who was removed from his position.
Following a motion put forward by Hussien Dala, the Majority Leader and representative of Dala constituency, the House made a decision to revise the law during their session on Tuesday.
Nigeria News 247 noted that this law had previously been altered in 2019 amidst the conflict between former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and the ousted Emir.
The addition of the first amendment resulted in the division of the Kano emirate into five separate emirates, including Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi Emirates.
First Class Emirs were appointed for each new emirate, leading to the removal of the then Emir of Kano. However, after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf won the election and promised to restore the old Kano Emirate system, various groups began advocating for Emir Sanusi’s reinstatement.
A month before Governor Yusuf took office, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), which was in power in Kano at that time, mentioned that a review of the emirates issue would be conducted.
Our presence in Nigeria, particularly in Kano, is widely recognized due to our successful campaign. We proudly demonstrated to the people the positive impact of the projects we initiated during our time in office, all thanks to divine intervention.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his team are poised to continue the progress we made, as affirmed by Kwankwaso.
As experienced leaders within the movement, we will continue to offer guidance on proper conduct. While we initially refrained from discussing the potential removal of the Emir, circumstances have now presented an opportunity for decision-makers to address this matter.
Those entrusted with leadership roles will deliberate on the next steps and make appropriate decisions after careful consideration.
Additionally, the recent division of the emirates into five will also undergo thorough evaluation. When a new leader assumes power at any level of governance, they inherit both favorable and challenging circumstances.
We trust that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf will be granted the wisdom necessary to address and overcome the difficulties facing Kano state, ensuring peace for all its inhabitants.
