A suspected electricity vandal, who has not yet been identified, was electrocuted while attempting to steal a transformer cable belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, according to a statement by Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC.

Ezeh described the event as “tragic and very unfortunate” and expressed concern over the increasing rate of vandalism targeting electricity installations within the EEDC network. He explained that the lifeless body of the suspected vandal was discovered near a distribution transformer at Missionary Avenue, Coal Camp, Enugu.

“It is presumed that power supply was restored while the deceased was cutting the armoured cables, leading to his electrocution,” Ezeh stated. He highlighted that vandalism is a significant challenge for the company, affecting both service quality and revenue.

In a related development, EEDC addressed a circulating video by Mazi Okechukwu Cyril Nwuche, who claims to be a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and the Anambra State Chairman of the South East Electricity Consumers Association. The video falsely claimed that EEDC was offering free prepaid meters to its customers. EEDC clarified that this information is incorrect and misleading, urging customers to seek accurate information and follow the proper procedures for obtaining meters.
