Ogun Govt Revokes Licences of Private Orphanages for Regulatory Non-Compliance
The Ogun State Government has revoked the provisional licenses of several private orphanages in the state for failing to comply with regulations aimed at safeguarding the welfare and safety of vulnerable children.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, made this known during a meeting with orphanage operators in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Friday.
Adeleye expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of some private orphanages, stating that the state would not tolerate illegal activities such as child trafficking, improper adoptions, or mistreatment of children.
She emphasized that the administration is committed to protecting children’s rights and urged the operators to strictly follow the established guidelines.
The commissioner highlighted that orphanages should serve a humanitarian purpose, and any misconduct would be met with prosecution. She also noted the government’s efforts to improve data collection to ensure accurate records of children placed in orphanages.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Adejumoke Adewole, added that unscheduled inspections of orphanages would continue to ensure compliance with the state’s directives.
In response, Mrs. Adeyemo Anthony, a representative of private orphanage owners, praised the government’s efforts and pledged to collaborate to protect the well-being of vulnerable children.
