Rainstorm displaces more than 1,000 inhabitants in Kogi community.
A severe rainstorm has displaced over 1000 residents in Iyara community, the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area in Kogi State. Reports indicate that more than one hundred houses were destroyed during the night storm that occurred on Monday.
Following the disaster, Oba Jacob Meduten, the Eleta Oluyara of Iyara, appealed to the government, affluent individuals, and organizations to assist the victims in alleviating their suffering. Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has urged residents to take precautions as the rainy season approaches rapidly.
Mouktar Atimah, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), confirmed the incident in Iyara, stating, “We received reports of a natural disaster in Iyara and immediately dispatched teams for on-the-spot assessment. The local government chairman also contacted us, and we are collaborating to minimize the plight of the affected victims.”
Hpe further advised residents to relocate from low-lying areas to higher ground and emphasized the importance of proper roofing to prevent further damage. Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has prioritized efforts to alleviate the suffering of Kogi State residents.
