Court Orders NMA to Assess Nnamdi Kanu’s Health, Submit Report in 8 Days
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to constitute a committee of medical experts to independently assess the health status of detained Biafra agitator, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The court ordered that the committee, to be made up of 8 to 10 qualified medical professionals, must include a cardiologist, a neurologist, and the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Abuja.
The expert panel has been given eight days to submit a comprehensive report to the court. The findings will help determine whether Kanu should be transferred from the Department of State Services (DSS) medical facility to the National Hospital for further treatment.
Justice Omotosho issued the ruling on Friday, noting that the NMA committee is expected to visit the DSS medical centre to assess its capacity to manage Kanu’s health condition.
He further granted the committee the liberty to consult or make use of any hospital within Nigeria necessary to complete its assessment.
The court’s decision follows conflicting medical evaluations submitted by DSS medical personnel and Kanu’s private consultants, with each party presenting opposing views on the severity of his health condition and the adequacy of the DSS facilities.
The court will reconvene after the submission of the report to deliberate on the next steps regarding Kanu’s medical care.
