The Borno Police Command reported that a recent attack in Maiduguri involved an Improvised Explosive Device, leading to the death of one man and injuring 11 others to varying extents.

Police Commissioner Yusuf Lawal shared this information on Friday during a briefing with the News Agency of Nigeria.

He explained that the explosion happened amid a protest against poor governance at Deribe Junction, close to the Federal Government Girls College Monguno Annex in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri.

Lawal noted that those injured were transported to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri for medical care, while the deceased was sent for an autopsy.

He reported that the police quickly dispatched personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Device unit at Base 13, who assessed the situation and secured the area surrounding a filling station.

In another matter, Lawal mentioned a case of culpable homicide in Biu local government area. He stated that Muhammad Wakshama informed authorities that his son-in-law, Ibrahim Bulama, had an altercation with his wife, Maryam Ibrahim, during which he struck her on the head with a stick, causing severe injuries.

The victim was taken to General Hospital Biu for medical care but was pronounced dead on Thursday. Lawal noted that the suspect has been apprehended and evidence has been collected as inquiries continue.

He also indicated that these events have raised the death toll in the state to 17 within the last 48 hours, with numerous others injured. The Borno command reassured residents that investigations are ongoing and normalcy has been restored in the area.
