The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has advised the 774 local council chairmen nationwide to refrain from endorsing the Hunger Protests scheduled from August 1 to 10, organized by various youth groups in response to widespread hardship.

At a press conference in Lafia on Thursday, ALGON President Aminu Mu’azu-Maifata emphasized that the association does not support the protests, citing confidence in the Federal Government’s plans under President Bola Tinubu.

Mu’azu-Maifata stated, “As representatives of the 774 local government areas across the country, ALGON urges all residents in these areas to reject protests and instead seek dialogue and peaceful solutions.”

He highlighted the administration’s efforts, including free farming inputs, investment loans at single-digit interest rates, student loans, and recent local government autonomy reforms aimed at improving the functionality and service delivery of local councils.

The ALGON President appealed for patience as the Federal Government works on implementing these reforms, acknowledging the public’s struggles but stressing that protests could worsen the situation.

Mu’azu-Maifata concluded, “We must strive for a prosperous and just Nigeria through peace and dialogue, avoiding a return to violence and destruction. Let us support efforts to strengthen our local governments and work towards the betterment of our communities.”
