The Federal Government has urged the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to end their seven-day warning strike.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the plea on Thursday during his visit to the National Eye Centre in Kaduna. Alausa assured that negotiations are ongoing to secure the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a kidnapped doctor and staff member of the centre.

“We are actively addressing the issue and have been in contact with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu,” he said. “I’ve also spoken with the Commissioner of Police, and efforts are being made to ensure her safe release.”

Alausa mentioned that he met with NARD leadership earlier in the week to urge them to call off the strike, as it may worsen the situation. He noted that while the kidnappers have been inconsistent in their demands, security forces are working hard for her rescue.

NARD began the strike to demand Dr. Popoola’s release after she was kidnapped in December 2023. The association’s local chairman, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed, confirmed that the strike continues, with medical and dental consultants joining in, following directives from the national body.
