Gov. Adeleke Stresses Need for Power Devolution to Address Economic Challenges
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has called for the devolution of power and financing to state governments as a solution to the nation’s economic hardships, unemployment, and hyperinflation.
Governor Adeleke made this call during the convocation ceremony at Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, on Sunday. He argued that decentralizing governance powers and responsibilities, rather than centralizing them, would better address these challenges.
He emphasized that economic federalism would promote subnational prosperity, enhance job creation, and boost local capacity across various sectors.
“At National Economic Council meetings, federal and state governments regularly discuss ways to tackle economic hardship, unemployment, and hyperinflation. Various options are being explored, but for us as a state, we believe the key lies in devolving powers and financial resources to state governments,” Adeleke said.
He acknowledged the tough economic times the graduates are facing and encouraged them to view the crisis as an opportunity for innovation and entrepreneurship.
“You should see this crisis as a chance to excel. Despite Nigeria’s challenges, there are opportunities for those with an entrepreneurial spirit. I urge you to be innovative and seize this moment to build a prosperous future,” he advised.
Governor Adeleke also reassured that the government is actively working to improve the economy and emphasized the importance of national stability and unity. “We must harness our regional potentials and maintain peace to resolve our economic issues,” he added.
He pledged his administration’s continued support for President Bola Tinubu in addressing the current crisis.
In his address to the graduates, Dr. Deji Adeleke, Pro Chancellor of Adeleke University, urged them to maintain hope and remain steadfast in the belief that hard times will eventually pass, advising them never to lose hope for a better future.
