Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has called for greater federal attention to the state, citing its historical significance in Nigeria’s colonial and post-colonial development. He urged the National Assembly to allocate more resources to Enugu in the 2026 federal budget and to accelerate work on ongoing federal road projects that link the state to other parts of the country.

Governor Mbah made the appeal during a visit by the Joint National Assembly Committee on Works—comprising members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives—who were on an oversight tour of federal road projects in Enugu State over the weekend. The delegation was led by Honourable Akin Alabi, Chairman of the House Committee on Works.

Praise for Governor Mbah’s Leadership

Commending Mbah’s administration, Hon. Alabi noted that contractors working on federal roads in the state had spoken highly of the governor’s cooperation and support.

“Contractors told us—without being asked—that the Governor has been very helpful. They feel secure and supported, and that’s important. A governor who wants to frustrate federal projects can do so, but you’re clearly prioritizing your people’s well-being,” Alabi stated.

He reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to ensuring that federal contractors deliver quality work and value for money.

Mbah Reiterates Commitment to Road Infrastructure

Responding, Governor Mbah underscored the critical role of road infrastructure in achieving his administration’s economic vision of growing Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within six years.

“We understand the value of roads. You can’t talk about economic growth without investing in road infrastructure. Roads connect markets, people, and industries and help deliver a life of dignity and comfort for our citizens,” Mbah said.

He emphasized that his government is not only rehabilitating existing roads but also committed to ensuring that all roads across the state are paved and motorable.

“On our part, we’re taking on state road projects without exception. We believe it’s a basic right for people to drive on paved roads,” he added.

Appeal for Faster Execution of Federal Road Projects

While appreciating the federal government’s ongoing interventions, Governor Mbah expressed concern over the slow pace of work on key highways, particularly the Makurdi–Enugu Expressway and the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway.

“Without sounding ungrateful, we commend the federal government for the ongoing work, but we urge that the contractors increase their pace,” he said.

He pledged continued support from the state government, especially in resolving issues related to right-of-way, compensation, and community engagement.

“We’re always ready to help. Whether it’s compensation or right-of-way issues, we’ll work with the affected people so contractors have no excuse to delay,” Mbah assured.

Lawmakers Present

Also in attendance during the visit were the Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, and Hon. Dennis Agbo, who represents Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency.
