The Vice Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Mr. Akinpelu Johnson, stated on Thursday that his presence at the “End Hunger Protest” in Egbeda was aimed at preventing any potential lawlessness.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Johnson explained that his monitoring of the protest was a precautionary measure to avoid a repeat of the disruptions witnessed during the #ENDSARS protests on October 8, 2020.

NAN observed Johnson and his team stationed at Egbeda Bus Stop, where the atmosphere remained calm, with minimal business activity.

Heavy security was noted in the area, but commercial vehicles and motorcycle operators continued to operate without major interruptions.

Johnson emphasized his role in safeguarding the community, saying, “As both the Vice Chairman and a local resident, my presence is to ensure the safety of my people. We want to avoid a repeat of the lawlessness from the #ENDSARS protests, where some individuals engaged in looting and violence.”

He added, “If the protest must take place, it should be conducted peacefully. I am familiar with the local dynamics and am here to help maintain calm. While we acknowledge the challenges, we should support a peaceful demonstration. The president is addressing these issues, so a calm approach is necessary.”

Rasheed Owonikoko, Branch Chairman of Alimosho B zone, also stressed that their focus was on maintaining security rather than opposing the protest itself. He noted, “Our goal is to ensure the environment remains secure and prevent any hijacking of the protest. We want to avoid a repeat of the violence and looting seen during the #ENDSARS protests.”
