Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that electoral manipulation continues to pose one of the biggest threats to democracy across Africa.

Jonathan made this assertion while speaking at the 2025 edition of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue held in Accra, Ghana.

He emphasized that when democracy fails to meet the expectations of the people, it creates room for frustration and desperation — conditions that can ultimately open the door to authoritarian rule.

“Democracy in Africa is under significant strain and at risk of collapse unless stakeholders urgently come together to rethink and reform it,” Jonathan said. “Electoral manipulation remains one of the continent’s most pressing challenges.”

He urged African leaders to commit to a form of democracy that prioritizes the future of the continent’s youth and ensures that every citizen’s voice is heard.

“We must take a hard look at our democratic systems and reshape them to serve the people better,” he added. “One of the critical flaws is our electoral process. Too often, people manipulate elections to hold on to power at all costs.”

Jonathan’s comments come amid growing concerns about democratic backsliding in parts of Africa, with increasing reports of rigged elections, voter suppression, and political instability.
