Metro: Four Declared Dead as Rescue Operations End in Anambra Market Building Collapse
Rescue operations have concluded at Eke Amawbia Market in Anambra State, where a one-story building housing shops collapsed on Thursday.
The collapse, which occurred with a heavy thud around midday, caused chaos in the area. Several traders and customers were trapped, prompting immediate rescue efforts.
On the same Thursday, two people were rescued alive. Police officers and volunteers continued to search through the rubble until Friday, ultimately recovering four deceased individuals.
A local source informed the NIGERIA NEWS 247that the rescue operation ended on Friday. Among the deceased was an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), a father of four.
“The NSCDC officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was at the market buying foodstuffs for his family when the disaster struck. His eldest son, just nine years old, and his widow, a nursing mother, are now left to deal with this loss.
“I was standing nearby when I saw him heading towards the market. We exchanged greetings, and he mentioned he was buying food for his family. Not even five minutes later, the building collapsed, crushing him. It’s just heartbreaking.
“Rescue operations ended yesterday, and three other individuals were also found, though their identities have not been confirmed,” the source said.
