The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported intercepting and seizing 207,976 kilograms of hard drugs at various seaports across the country between January 2023 and March 2024.

Mr. Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, disclosed this in a document sent to The NIGERIA NEWS 247 on Sunday.

Providing details, Babafemi revealed that in the first quarter of 2024, 14 suspects were arrested with 16.69 kg of cocaine and 11,622.229 kg of cannabis sativa. Additionally, 167 individuals were apprehended with 196,336.99 kg of various drugs from January to October 2023.

Regarding the financial value of the seizures, Babafemi explained that the agency avoids assigning monetary values to prevent glorifying criminal activities or motivating others to engage in drug trafficking.

In response, Dr. Muda Yusuf, Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprises, advocated for stricter sanctions on offenders. He emphasized that harsher penalties might deter individuals from engaging in drug trafficking due to the increased risk of severe consequences.
