Federal Government Responds to Planned Labour Strike, Expresses Concern Over Economic Impact

The Federal Government has issued a response to the proposed strike by organized labor, scheduled to commence on Monday, cautioning that it could exacerbate the economic challenges faced by citizens.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejoecha, representing the government, emphasized the need for any new minimum wage agreement to avoid widespread job losses, particularly in the Organized Private Sector, which employs a significant portion of the nation’s workforce.

Onyejoecha warned that the strike would not be in the best interests of the country, especially amid ongoing negotiations. She stressed that the government has shown commitment and goodwill throughout the negotiations and has proposed comprehensive solutions, including a wage increase to N60,000 for federal workers, introduction of CNG-fueled buses, and enhanced financial access for MSMEs.

Additionally, investments in strategic sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, education, and healthcare are promised to stimulate economic growth. The government aims to strike a balance between the needs of workers and the country’s economic realities, ensuring any agreement reached is sustainable and beneficial for all parties involved.
