Ogun Assembly Approves New Guidelines for Local Government Elections
The Ogun State House of Assembly has approved the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission’s (OGSIEC) request for revised election guidelines, in accordance with sections 3(i)(i) and 5 of the Ogun State Regulations Approval Law 2020.
This approval came after Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi presented a report on the commission’s request during a plenary session, presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Tuesday.
The motion for adoption was moved by Deputy Whip Tella Babatunde, seconded by Damilare Bello, and unanimously supported by all lawmakers through a voice vote. Subsequently, Majority Leader Yusuf Sheriff moved the motion to convert the committee’s recommendations into a House resolution, seconded by Minority Leader Lukmon Adeleye, and supported by the entire house.
Earlier, the Speaker read a letter from OGSIEC Chairman Babatunde Osibodu, seeking the assembly’s approval for the revised guidelines under the Ogun State Regulations Approval Law 2020.
In another matter, the Speaker also acknowledged receipt of a correspondence from Governor Dapo Abiodun, proposing a bill aimed at improving electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within Ogun State. The bill seeks to establish an electricity market, key power sector bodies, and enforce consumer rights and obligations, among other objectives.
The letter from the Governor stated: “I am pleased to forward the above-captioned bill, through your good self, to the House of Assembly for due consideration and passage into law. The bill, which was approved at the Executive Council Meeting held on the 1st of August 2024, is necessitated by the passage of the Electricity Act 2023, which empowers states to provide a comprehensive legal and institutional framework for the power sector in the areas of generation, transmission, distribution, trading, and enforcement of consumer rights and obligations, amongst others.”
