Relief on Abuja-Lokoja Highway as FRSC Opens 2nd Lane
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has successfully eased the prolonged gridlock on the Abuja-Lokoja highway by opening a second lane to traffic, allowing for smoother flow in both directions.
The congestion, which began on Sunday near Koton-Karfe, had left motorists stranded for up to 10 hours. However, as of Tuesday morning, traffic on the Lokoja-Koton-Karfe-Abuja and Abuja-Koton-Karfe-Lokoja routes has significantly improved.
Kogi FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Kumar Tsukwam, said the situation was resolved through collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and construction companies to accelerate road repairs and provide alternative routes.
“Contractors were asked to fast-track their work and create diversions to ease traffic. Vehicles were diverted to the under-construction Lokoja/Abuja lane to reduce congestion,” Tsukwam stated.
He attributed the initial gridlock to lane violations, motorist indiscipline, and impatience, especially from smaller vehicles.
To maintain the improved traffic flow, FRSC has increased personnel deployment and is working in coordination with military officers to enforce discipline on the highway.
The Sector Commander urged road users to exercise patience and responsibility to avoid future disruptions.
