The senate has introduced a bill seeking to create Tiga, a new state, from Kano.

On Thursday, the bill introduced by Senator Kawu Sumaila from Kano south was read for the first time. The proposed legislation aims to amend the constitution in order to establish a new state.

Kano, which is known for its large population, consists of 44 LGAs. The specifics of how the bill plans to divide them remain unclear.

In a repeat occurrence, another senator is putting forward a proposal for the establishment of a new state. Previously, in June, Senator Ned Nwoko from Delta north announced his intention to introduce a constitutional bill aimed at forming Anioma, a new state located in the south-eastern region. As of now, the south-east geo-political zone comprises five states.

In a recent social media post, the senator highlighted the urgent need for a new state to be established in Nigeria in order to rectify the unequal distribution of states across different geopolitical zones.

Specifically, he pointed out that while the South East region has five states, most other regions have more except for the North West which has seven states.

This imbalance not only affects representation but also leads to disparities in resource allocation, as evidenced by the fact that the South East only has 15 lawmakers compared to the 18 lawmakers from other zones in the senate.
