Nigerians will soon be paying more for electricity, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The reason? Electricity production is a challenging and costly process. TCN Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz explained that producing electricity is not easy, citing factors like the exchange rate.

Despite the hike, Abdulaziz noted that electricity costs in Nigeria are still lower than in neighboring countries like Niger, Burkina Faso, and Senegal. This comes after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) increased electricity tariffs for customers receiving 20 hours of power daily, known as Band A classification, from N66 to N225 per kilowatt-hour.

Here’s a breakdown of the situation:

– Tariff Hike: NERC increased electricity tariffs for Band A customers by 240%.
– New Tariff: N225 per kilowatt-hour, up from N66 .
– Band A Classification: Customers receiving 20 hours of power daily.
– Comparative Costs: Electricity costs in Nigeria remain lower than in some neighboring countries.

Abdulaziz emphasized that Nigerians are getting 24-hour power supply daily, although not everyone receives this amount. Those in the Band A category get 20 to 22 hours of power supply.
