Resign Now, You’re an Embarrassment, Chekwas Okorie Tells INEC Chairman Yakubu
Former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has called for the immediate resignation of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Okorie claims that Yakubu has been found guilty of contempt of court for not recognizing Chief Edozie Njoku as the National Chairman of APGA, despite a Supreme Court ruling affirming Njoku’s position.
At the Court of Appeal, where Okorie and other party leaders submitted a petition, he stated, “In a sane country, Professor Mahmood Yakubu would not continue as the head of the highest democratic institution after being found guilty of contempt since November last year. The fact that the Court of Appeal has delayed sentencing does not change the guilty verdict.”
Okorie criticized the decision to delay sentencing, arguing that the constitution requires the lower court to complete its proceedings. He called Yakubu’s continued tenure a scandal, saying, “Mahmood must vacate his office. His presence is an embarrassment to Nigeria and a disgrace to the highest democratic institution in the country.”
