Brazil head coach Dorival Junior has accepted “full responsibility” for their 2024 Copa América quarter-final exit.

The Selecao were defeated by 10-man Uruguay 4-2 in a penalty shootout on Saturday.

“I must acknowledge that these results were not what we expected, and I take full responsibility for them. However, I believe this team has significant potential to grow, evolve, and improve,” Dorival told reporters.

The match ended 0-0 after regulation time, with Brazil failing to score even after Uruguay’s Nahitan Nandez was sent off in the 74th minute.

Éder Militão and Douglas Luiz missed their penalties during the shootout, while Alisson Becker saved a penalty from Uruguay defender José María Giménez.

Manuel Ugarte scored the decisive spot-kick, advancing Uruguay to the next round.

Brazil, who were finalists in 2021 and champions in 2019, managed only one win during the group stage.
