Pope Francis Praises Sport’s Unifying Power as Olympics Approach
Pope Francis praised the unifying impact of sports on Sunday as the Olympic and Paralympic Games approach, and reiterated his call for a global truce during the events.
“Sport possesses significant social power, capable of peacefully bringing together people from various cultures,” he told pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square after his weekly Angelus prayer, ahead of Friday’s Olympics opening ceremony in Paris.
“I hope this event will be a symbol of the inclusive world we aspire to create, and that athletes, through their sportsmanship, will serve as ambassadors of peace and exemplary role models for young people,” said the 87-year-old Pope.
He noted the ancient tradition of the Olympics as a time to declare a truce in conflicts, reflecting a genuine commitment to peace.
The Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11, followed by the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8.
