Massimiliano Allegri was sacked by Juventus on Friday following a furious outburst during his team’s midweek Italian Cup victory.
Juventus stated that Allegri was dismissed for “certain behaviour during and after the Italian Cup final that the club deemed incompatible with its values.” Despite the club’s 15th Italian Cup win on Wednesday night, Allegri was sent off in the final minutes after angrily confronting match officials and later dismissively waving away sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli during the celebrations.
Additionally, Allegri allegedly manhandled and threatened the chief editor of newspaper Tuttosport before the post-match press conference.
Juve had been rumored to be replacing Allegri with Bologna coach Thiago Motta in the summer, but the decision was expedited with two matches remaining in the season. Juventus are currently fourth in Serie A, having earned just 15 points in their last 15 league matches, and face Bologna on Monday night with both teams tied on 67 points and already qualified for next season’s revamped Champions League.
The club did not specify whether Allegri’s dismissal was with just cause, which could potentially save Juventus from paying the remaining year of his contract, worth around seven million euros before bonuses. The Italian Football Federation’s disciplinary tribunal has launched an investigation into Allegri, who received an automatic two-match ban for his red card and may face further punishment.
