Libya denies sabotage, attributes Super Eagles’ airport delay to logistics issues
The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has explained the prolonged delay of the Nigerian Super Eagles at Al Abraq International Airport, attributing the situation to routine air traffic and logistical issues rather than any intentional misconduct.
In a statement released on Monday via X, the LFF clarified that the diversion of the Nigerian team’s flight was not meant as a hostile act.
“We firmly reject any claims of foul play or sabotage,” the LFF stated, emphasizing that their national team had recently faced similar challenges when arriving in Nigeria for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
“Despite our difficulties, we did not publicly accuse or question the integrity of Nigerian authorities,” the statement continued.
The LFF explained that the rerouting of the Super Eagles’ chartered ValueJet aircraft to Al Abraq, instead of the planned Benghazi landing, was due to standard air traffic control and security protocols common in international travel. “Delays or rerouting, while unfortunate, are not uncommon at airports worldwide,” they added.
The federation expressed respect for Nigeria and stated that they never intended to complicate matters for the Super Eagles, who have been delayed at the airport for over 15 hours.
The LFF noted their commitment to hospitality, saying, “We have always treated visiting teams, including our African brothers, with respect and dignity.”
They urged for understanding and highlighted football’s role in promoting unity. “It is an honor to host these events, and we strive to ensure that all teams feel safe and respected as our guests.
Our doors are open to our Nigerian brothers and all African teams, fostering the spirit of unity, sportsmanship, and friendship in football,” the statement concluded.
In response, the Nigeria Football Federation has filed a formal complaint with the Confederation of African Football regarding the incident and is making arrangements to bring the Super Eagles home.
